You’ve never heard of me, but I am the Charles Darwin of career coaches. When I rewrite a resume or advise a client during a job search, I preach “natural selection” and survival of the fittest. It’s a jungle out here!
If you are a client of mine, you know the drill. You’ve been warned – by me and dozens of people like me – that uploading your resume to “black holes” on the internet wastes precious time and energy.
Why do people ignore all the good advice – and success stories – they are hearing from career coaches?
I’ve figured it out. The missing link is Sir Charles Darwin (1809–1882) – famous for natural selection and survival of the fittest. So I’ll let my birds illustrate “nature’s way” and “survival of the fittest” for your job search.
The birds show you two scenarios – survival and extinction. The first scenario is a FEEDING FRENZY – somebody threw a few crumbs on the beach and now all the birds converge on one spot. They’re fighting and pecking each other’s eyes out over a few crumbs.
Clients who join the feeding frenzy usually complain, “Something is wrong with my resume – I sent out over 200, but zero responses.” Hey, I told you not to do that!
That’s how most people start their searches. They call the recruiters or log onto job sites like Indeed, LinkedIn, or Monster – and then they sit back and wait for the recruiter or the job site to throw out a few crumbs.
Competition is fierce, and you don’t even know what you’re fighting over – in other words, you never selected a target, so you must fight for somebody’s crumbs. The only winning strategy here is luck – you might get lucky like Lotto.
Fortunately, there’s a much better strategy. Here is Sam the Seagull: his video is all over the Internet and – by now – he’s probably the National Bird of Scotland, his home country.
Sam steers clear of the feeding frenzy. He surveys the landscape, decides on a single target, and pursues it. He works his way inside, makes a bold move, and he gets what he wants. Every day, like clockwork, Sam walks inside this store and steals a bag of Doritos from the same spot – no feeding frenzy, no competitors.
