What’s Your Plan B?
People often ask me, “Look, I’m not interested in changing jobs. But is there something that I should be doing to protect career — and my family — from another employment crash?
If you are currently employed, congratulations! You have a valuable asset. Your job is to nurture that asset like an investment property. You want to nurture that asset and make it more valuable.
So if you’re happily employed, here are 3 things you should be doing:
#1: Be aware of trends. I urge you to buy a book called “the coming jobs war,” it’s published by the Gallup polling organization — this will fill you in on global employment and economic trends that are affecting everybody. So if you’re feeling jittery and don’t know why, just trust your instincts and get this book.
#2 I want you to get off your asset. By that I mean I want you to take some kind of intiative at work and document what you’re doing. Make the best use of your time. Start right where you are and think — is there something that can be done a little bit better here? Some kind of improvement or something that has not been tried or done?
If you are laid off, this is gold! You’ll wish you had done this.
I want you to think about it, make a little plan, and start doing it. Don’t even tell anybody at first. The idea make useful contributions and document them on your resume. Hugely important that you do this before another crash happens.
And — by the way — if you’re not good at this. If you’re not good at strategizing that way or writing a resume, then get some help. Take the shortcut! — get somebody to help you. As an advertisement, I have won several national awards for writing bios, LinkedIn profiles, and resumes. Doesn’t have to be me — just get somebody to help you.
#3: Apply the 3 Cs of career defense: We don’t have time to get into the details right now, but these 3Cs are the basis of this site and they’re the basis of nearly every successful job or career transition.
By the way, here’s another great resource if you’re employed — sign up for CAREER DEFENSE TV — these are short video clips that I send out every week or so. In my travels I see and hear all kinds of trends and politically incorrect traps that are not reported anywhere. I just post these updates as short video clips.
Look — thank you very much for visiting. It’s been my pleasure talking with you today. I wish you the very best of good luck in your career, and remember — IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY EMPLOYED, DON’T SIT ON YOUR ASSET!
